Core System Capabilities

Zero-Latency Text Capture

Text field opens instantly ready for premise input. No title requirement, no category selection, no form friction. Capture speed optimized for backstage environment.

Three-Tier Material Hierarchy

Premise foundation layer promotes to bit mid-level structures, which nest under chunk organizational containers. Single-button promotion architecture between tiers.

Drag-Reorder Setlist Constructor

Build performance sequences with visual drag handles. Real-time duration calculation compares running time against target time allocation for venue constraints.

Stage-Optimized Display Mode

Performance interface enlarges text for low-light readability, maintains screen wake state, provides swipe navigation and integrated timer. Dark background minimizes stage light interference.

Post-Show Rating Interface

Three-option rating taxonomy per performed bit: Killed, Ok, Died. System captures text snapshot as performed that night, preserving material evolution across show history.

Visual Material Constellation

Node-based map visualization where circle diameter represents material volume per tag, glow intensity indicates performance success metrics, connection lines show thematic relationships.

Technical Specifications and Architecture

Local-First Data Persistence Layer

PunchPad implements a pure local storage architecture with zero cloud dependency. All premises, bits, chunks, setlists, and performance history reside exclusively on device. This design decision eliminates network latency from the capture workflow and ensures material remains accessible in venues with unreliable connectivity. The system writes to disk immediately after text input, preventing data loss during unexpected app termination.

Hierarchical Material State Machine

Material exists in one of three defined states: premise, bit, or chunk. Premises represent raw observations or angle discoveries. When a premise develops sufficient structure, single-button promotion elevates it to bit status. Bits that thematically cluster can nest under chunk organizational containers. This state machine prevents premature optimization while providing clear promotion paths as material matures through stage testing iterations.

Performance Snapshot Versioning System

Each show creates an immutable snapshot of performed material text as it existed that night. This versioning architecture preserves the evolution of joke wording across multiple performances. Post-show ratings attach to specific snapshots rather than current text, enabling accurate historical analysis even as jokes continue to develop. The system maintains full edit history while keeping the performance record intact.

Operational Workflow and Implementation

Capture to Performance Pipeline

  • Open app directly into capture text field
  • Type premise observation with zero metadata
  • System persists to local storage immediately
  • Add flat lowercase tags as material develops
  • Promote premise to bit when structure emerges
  • Nest developed bits under chunk containers
  • Build setlist by selecting material from library
  • Drag reorder items to optimize joke sequence
  • Enter stage mode for performance interface
  • Swipe navigation advances through setlist

Post-Show Analysis Cycle

  • Rate each performed bit with three-option taxonomy
  • Add improvised material discovered during set
  • Skip unperformed items without penalty
  • System captures text snapshot as performed
  • View show history with date and venue metadata
  • Access visual map showing tag node sizes
  • Node glow intensity reflects performance success
  • Connection lines reveal thematic relationships
  • Export complete material archive as Markdown
  • JSON export available for external analysis tools

Developer Context

PunchPad represents purpose-built software for the working comedian workflow. The application architecture prioritizes capture speed, offline reliability, and performance utility over feature breadth.

Material manager category designation indicates functionality scope: this is organizational infrastructure for comedy development, not a social platform or content distribution system.

The utilities category placement reflects the app's tool nature rather than entertainment classification, emphasizing practical workflow optimization over consumption experience.
